  Onvetta Herrin

My name is Onvetta Herrin. I joined the RHPC on Nov. 9, 2008. I grew up on Lake Cumberland in Kentucky, the oldest child of a farmer. Only three of us kids, and I was the only horse crazy one.

I remember lying in bed at night dreaming (pretending) that I had this beautiful horse that would do anything I asked. At 12, my Dad bought my first horse, a 13 hand black pony named Midnight. Looking back, I realize he needed to get me to leave the local stable owner alone, and he was trying to support my love of horses. However, Midnight had a few quirks. Low hanging branches scraped the pest off his back, why walk when you can get there faster running, and a bit in his mouth made him fold up his legs and lie down until it was removed. I loved that horse, and he taught me a lot – patience and what a mane is really for!

Then came marriage, 2 children, a job, and later a divorce. I was just too busy to have that horse and the barn with all his friends.

In 1995, I remarried. To a wonderful man who has given me so much more than I ever dared to hope for. Not so much the material things, but the emotional ones. I almost immediately bought 2 horses, then a 3rd, and a 4th. One day he was writing the check for their board, and told me it was time for me to find us a place with a barn, a BIG barn. It took me all of 3 days, and we bought a SMALL house with a BIG barn,13 stalls, a small arena, and a tack room. We do not have much pasture, so we feed year round. Guess how many horses we have now? Thirteen. The barn is full. Several breeds, as in my opinion, a good horse is a good horse, regardless of the breed. We have 2 Missouri Fox Trotters, 2 Rockies, 3 Tenn Walkers, 5 Kentucky Mts, and a Saddlebred. All mild mannered, willing and loving. A lot of different personalities, with an attitude here and there. But, a great herd of horses. I can send my 7 yr old grand son to fetch a horse out of the pasture and know he’s safe.

For the last 4 years, I have shown with the KMSHA, and in local fun shows. Showing with me, is my now 12 year old foster granddaughter, Icis. After being at the HHF on Demo Row in 2007, and winning the 2008 Versatility award at the Internationals, we are looking for something to just have fun. We choose the RHPC’s. You offer it all! Dress up for parades, trail riding, clinics, and friendships.

We are looking forward to being a part of the RHPC’s, and getting to know you. Icis is helping find the right tack, and we will shop for our outfits this season to be ready by spring.

Now, let me tell you a little about Icis. She is the typical 12 year old in most respects. She loves to try on all her clothes, and leaves them right where they land. The computer is her next favorite, so much so, we got her one of her own so she would stay off mine. She stands in the refrigerator door looking for something that obviously isn’t there. This child is always eating! And loves to argue over nothing at all. She drives us insane, but we love her anyway. She loves horses, and never passes up an opportunity to ride or show off. She owns her own horses, 4 of them. She lives with us, along with her grandmother, Jackie. The two of them are so much help, and are my best friends.

If we’re not in the house, come to the barns.
